Source: Detroit Free PressSept.self storage 04--A new generation of chimpanzees has begun at the The Detroit Zoo with the birth of a female chimp Aug. 10.Zoo officials released the first photos today of Zuhura -- named after the Swahili word for morning star, said spokeswoman Patricia Janeway.Zuhura has been spending her first month clinging to her mother Chiana as the two move about the zoo's four-acre, indoor-outdoor Great Apes of Harambee habitat."Visitors can spot them climbing trees outdoors on sunny days and hanging out in the habitat's spacious indoor dayrooms during inclement weather," Janeway said in a press release.Besides being the chimpanzees' home -- where Zuhura's mother was born in 1994 to Abby, now 30 -- the habitat also contains western lowland gorillas and drills. The primates in the habitat "spend their days foraging, grooming and playing, just as they would in their native African environment," Janeway said."It's exciting to have three generations of chimps repr迷你倉sented here," said Detroit Zoological Society Curator of Mammals Robert Lessnau in the release. "Chiana is proving to be a great first-time mom." Lessnau said.Zoo curators keep careful track of family lineages, Janeway said. Zuhura is the first baby born to Chiana, 19, and the third in five years for father Imara, 18, who also sired another female chimp named Akira, 2, and the male Ajua, 4, with their 26-year-old mother Akati, she said.Zuhura's birth occurred as part of an effort with other zoos nationwide to preserve endangered or threatened species, according to the Detroit Zoo press release. The effort, called the Species Survival Plan, is coordinated by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
