"It was an unbelievable game and I just got asked to Homecoming (dance). It was a fantastic night."Kramer and his offensive linemates dominated in the second half as they paved the way for sophomore running back Tyler Adkins, who rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns after intermission."Tyler was amazing," Kramer said. "He played his heart out."A Memorial Stadium crowd of 11,000 saw third-ranked Class 6A Union (1-2) rally from a 14-0 deficit with 31 consecutive points en route to winning for the 29th time in the past 30 meetings with the No. 2 Tigers (2-1).Adkins, who started the season at No. 3 on the depth chart before injuries sidelined Justin Silmon and Derek Finch, finished with 234 yards on 34 carries."Our offensive line was great," said Adkins, who had an ice pack on a sore shoulder. "I couldn't ask for anything better. They did a fantastic job."Adkins carried on eight of Union's first nine offensive plays in the third quarter, gaining 100 yards to help turn a 14-7 halftime deficit into a 21-14 lead."Our coaches challenged us at halftime to step up our game," Kramer said.Union coach Kirk Fridrich said about the challenge, "In the second half it was about us giving max effort. At halftime I had a sense we weren't very tired. I don't know if it was because it was cooler, but for me, I told them they weren't playing hard enough. We should have had more guys exhausted at halftime, and they took that key and started playing harder."Adkins opened the second-half scoring with a 10-yard TD run as he carried on all four plays of the 58-yard drive. But a missed extra-point kick kept Broken Arrow ahead 14-13.Coleby Evans barreled into the end zone on a 2-yard TD run and Zach Fisher added the two-point run on a quarterback draw to give Union a 21-14 lead with 4:58 left in the third quarter.Union's Deion McKittrick recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set up Jace Holt's 20-yard field goal that made it 24-14.Early in the fourth quarter, Adkins' 8-yard TD run increased Union's lead to 31-14. Broken Arrow answered with a seven-play, 72-yard drive, capped by Jamal Shaw's 7-yard TD run with 8:01 left. But Adkins' 12-yard TD run with 6:01 left sealed t自存倉e outcome."They wanted it more than we did," Broken Arrow coach Steve Spavital said. While Adkins was running wild, the Redskins' defense contained the Tigers' strong running game, which was held to 104 yards on 29 carries. Oklahoma State commit Devon Thomas, coming off an ankle injury last week, was held to 26 yards on 11 carries."Our defense is improving and playing as a unit," Fridrich said.Union's defense kept Broken Arrow from breaking the game open early as the Redskins' offense struggled in the first quarter.Broken Arrow took advantage of Union's three turnovers in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead. Tigers quarterback Coleman Key somersaulted into the end zone on a 2-yard TD run to cap a nine-play drive with 4:38 left in the first. The drive started when Broken Arrow's Justin Perkins recovered an Adkins fumble at the Union 43.Late in the first period, Tigers defensive lineman Gage Kaiser scored on a 37-yard return after scooping a snap that Fisher couldn't corral."We were all kind of down, but we couldn't let that stop us and had to turn it around some kind of way," Adkins said.Union quickly settled down and the game turned after a defensive stop kept the Tigers from taking a 21-0 lead. The Redskins answered with a 12-play, 63-yard drive. Jeffery Mead caught three passes for 40 yards and provided a big block on the possession. Union scored when Mead pulled down Fisher's pass in the left corner of the end zone to convert a fourth-and-6 with 4:49 left in the second quarter. That cut Union's deficit to 14-7 and led to its second-half blitz."Coach (Fridrich) told us at halftime we had to be in the right mindset," Adkins said. "We had to get it going and we got it done in the second half."Union 38, Broken Arrow 21Union 0 7 17 14 -- 38Broken Arrow 14 0 0 7 -- 21BA: Key 2 run (Hathhorn kick)BA: G.Kaiser 37 fumble return (Hathhorn kick)UN: Mead 12 pass from Fisher (Holt kick)UN: Adkins 10 run (kick blocked)UN: Evans 2 run (Fisher run)UN: FG Holt 20UN: Adkins 8 run (Holt kick)BA: Shaw 7 run (Hathhorn kick)UN: Adkins 12 run (Holt kick)BA UNFirst Downs 17 21Passing Yards 132 139Comp-Att-Int 25-13-0 22-11-1Rushes-Yards 29-104 41-220Punts-Avg 5-36 2-29Fumbles-Lost 3-1 5-2Penalties-Yards 6-47 7-64Barry Lewis 918-581-8393barry.lewis@tulsaworld.comCopyright: ___ (c)2013 Tulsa World (Tulsa, Okla.)
